It is Christmas – A Letter to Our Missionary

To our missionary,

It is Christmas.

We decorated the whole house just like we always do. The tree is covered in the same ornaments it always is. And throughout the main floor are the familiar wall hangings and framed art that all say the same word, “Believe.”

It is Christmas.

And you are far away. Santa won’t come, nor his reindeer…and there probably won’t be the time or the means to make a snowman. Yours will be a simple Christmas. One that is filled with Christ, with stories of His birth, wise men and shepherds who followed His star, and an opportunity to teach others of what it means to believe.

It is Christmas.

And you know that we will gather as a family and Grandma will hand out her white envelopes, and we will think of what our gift for the Savior will be this year. We already know ours…our gift to the Savior is giving up you for two years. As hard as it is, we know you are a good gift…one that the Savior will cherish.

It is Christmas.

A time for believing in Christ. A time for celebrating His ability to lift, strengthen and comfort. He is the giver of every good gift, the High Priest of good things to come, and the One who orchestrates miracles in the ordinary moments. This is His church. The scriptures are a means of personal revelation from Him. His tender mercies are carefully orchestrated in our behalf. He lives, He is real, His message is sure.

It is Christmas.

And on this day you are His witness.
A witness to the world that every good gift comes from Him.

It is Christmas.

May you love every minute of this holiday this year.
Make cherished memories.
Remember that this experience is fleeting and cling to the moments that will make up your Christmas as a missionary.
Create experiences that will be memorable for those within your circle of influence.
Allow this day to be completely different than anything you have experienced before…and find happiness in all of those differences.
Let Christ be the most important part of this Christmas…allow for sacred moments that will allow you to feel Him near you today.

This isn’t an ordinary day, this is His holiday…and perhaps this year you will honor it in a way you never have before.

We pray you will feel His warmth, and His love, and His miracles, and your heart will be filled with a happiness you have not known.

This is the day of His birth…believe it.
This is His celebration…cherish it.
This is His holiday…honor it.

It is Christmas.
