Description

The California Long Beach mission is full of vibrant cultures and people. Missionaries have the opportunity to serve God’s children from every corner of the earth.  Be prepared– there is warm climate, lots of biking, and many faith building experiences as you serve The Lord in this mission with urban, beach, and suburban areas. Southern California is beautiful, but more so, you will come to love the people with all of your heart.

The Church

The church is very strong in Southern California, where many members are eager to assist in the Lord’s work throughout your mission. Dinner appointments are a common occurrence, as members are also very welcoming to missionaries in their region.

Food

There are many different cultures and people in this mission, so missionaries encounter a variety of food. An open mind goes a long way when it comes to trying foods that are unfamiliar at first. Those in a Spanish speaking mission: be prepared to try spicy foods, as there will be many opportunities to explore the wonderful tastes of different peppers.

A good bike will be crucial for your mission. Seek out a quality bike that will be able to withstand the rough roads that you will encounter during your time in the Long Beach mission.  A helmet and a strong lock (one that can’t be cut by bolt cutters) will also be important as petty bike theft is a concern.

Safety

The first and foremost thing to remember is that you are on the Lord’s errand and if you obey the mission rules, you will be protected.  There are areas in the Long Beach mission that may seem rough at first, but trust in The Lord, prayers, and obedience will give you the confidence that you need. You will find that even the roughest looking individuals can have the softest hearts.

There are many different cultures with varying customs, so keep an open mind and you will find that taking the extra time to learn about someone’s background will take you a long ways when it comes to building a relationship of trust and love.

Local Lingo

Be ready to hear many new phrases and slang depending on where your serve.  You will enjoy the variety that each mission language has for local lingo.

Essential Equipment

A strong bike lock, helmet, a quality bike repair kit, a good rain coat for winter.
